Data extracted from "Impact on US Agriculture of Biotechnology-Derived Crops Planted in 2003 - An Update of Eleven Case Studies", October 2004, S. Sankula and E. Blumenthal, National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy, http://www.ncfap.org.whatwedo/pdf/2004finalreport.pdf.

According to Monsanto Company, the maker of Roundup, worldwide there are 12 weed species with biotypes confirmed to be resistant to glyphosate. Information on these is available from the International Survey of Herbicide Resistant Weeds at www.weedscience.com. Seven of these resistant biotypes are found in the United States. Some were found in areas where Roundup Ready crops are not grown.

Glyphosate-resistant weeds found in US in areas where Roundup Ready crops are grown:

  • Palmer amaranth (Palmer pigweed)
    Confirmed in Georgia in 2005
Suspected in Tennessee, North Carolina and Arkansas
  • Common ragweed
    Arkansas, Missouri
  • Marestail (Horseweed)
AR, CA, DE, KY, IN, MD, MO, MS, NE, NC, NJ, OH, PA, TN
  • Waterhemp
    Missouri
  • Giant ragweed
    Indiana, Ohio

The other two weeds in the U.S. are:

  • Italian Ryegrass
    Oregon (orchard setting)
  • Rigid Ryegrass
    California (discovered in almonds)
